fun is spelt A U S T I N!

Due to the popular dissatisfaction of my previous blog entry I will post this so as to set aside any fears that you may all think I’m on the brink of suicide. I’m not. Not everything I write represents my own personal state of mind. If all writers wrote like that then there wouldn’t be many of us left around. Just because someone writes from the point of view of a murderer doesn’t mean she or he is one! So here’s one for the happy times...to let you know I’m fine...Mum!!
We’re currently in Austin Texas. Have been since Saturday evening when we walked a mile in the wrong direction to find our hostel. No surprise there really! We had been intending only to stay until Monday morning but having met some really great people here we decided to stay on until Thursday. Spending some time just chilling out and actually getting to know people has been a magnificent experience. I think we are having the most fun yet here in Austin.
The city itself is quite a decent place. The huge State Capitol sits on a hill overlooking the city, its grounds filled with old canons and pretty fountains. Inside is free to look around and an interesting insight into the way Texas is run. The rest of the city is pretty average, 6th street is the main bar district and this Halloween it has been packed every night with thousands of people all dressed up in the craziest costumes.
But the best place we’ve found is the natural spring. Surrounded by woodland, this pool has wonderfully clear water so that you can see all the fish, plant life and rock formations. Swimming in the water is a totally refreshing experience especially if one is recovering from last night’s antics...Oliver!! I must say though the diving that was going on was pretty impressive. Even Ollie’s belly flops and failed penguin dives!
On Sunday we went to an old fashioned cinema to watch a movie. It was such a great experience. The rows of chairs had 'lecture theatre' style tables running in front of them and you only had to write down a food or drink order and someone would come along and get it for you. And I don’t mean nachos and popcorn. Full on meals like steak and pizzas were making their way over to people! I almost had to physically tie Ollie’s hands down so he didn’t spend all of our money!
The hostel is situated alongside a beautiful lake surrounded by trees. Its a real escape from the traveling experience. For the first time in ages we don’t have bags under my eyes and have managed to clean our teeth three days in a row! Little things that we have grown to appreciate massively since being away!
So don’t worry Mum, Ollie and I are fine! We couldn’t be happier :)

  1. You have no idea how your "other” blog from Austin effected your blog followers!! You are a writer of fantastic attention to deal and pathos. I spoke with one of your followers to day and was able to say that all was well but that your blog was a critique and reflection on the subject. I hope I said the right words? Mum and I have been looking on Google maps each time we read the blog to see if we can see your location. Looking at the street view really helps us imagine you and Ollie on your travels.
